Portraits

Portraits by Graeme Rosner, commissioned and premiered by Judah Rendelman.

Portraits is an eclectic collection of 5 movements based on different pieces of art from the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC. Highly lyrical in some sections, highly technical in others, Portraits features a quirky backing track filled with vintage tape sounds as well as real acoustic brass instruments and voices. It is well suited for anyone from undergraduates to professionals - and clocking in at 11 minutes - it makes an excellent program centerpiece. Or feel free to pick and choose the movements you want! (V. Red Attitude makes an excellent stand-alone piece)

Basawili

Basawili by Graeme Rosner, commissioned and premiered by Ethan B. Dilley.

Basawili was inspired by the book Master of Poisons by Andrea Hairston. The rich world the book describes inspired me to write a piece in which each movement represents a concept or character from its world and also features a quote from the book that represents the concept in some way. I created a soundscape for each concept and then melded them together to create one continuous and free-flowing piece of music. "Basawili" is a word in the fictional language Anawanama which roughly translates to "not the end, more breath to come." I found this to be a beautiful and timely sentiment. The book is overtly a commentary on climate change, but as I compiled the various quotes that go along with each movement, I realized that it contains commentary on a great many areas of social justice.

Liquefact

Liquefact by Graeme Rosner, commissioned and performed by the Pivot Duo on their album Terraform.

Liquefact is a virtuosic duet for horn and saxophone with electronic accompaniment that pushes the soloists to their technical limits. The backing track features intense, brass-band sounds recorded by real musicians, as well as trap beats, 808s and other synthesizers.

The First Rain

The world premiere of The First Rain by Graeme Rosner. This piece was commissioned and premiered by Catie Balsamo at the University of South Carolina on April 23rd, 2021.

The First Rain is a short, energetic piece well suited for opening or closing a program. The electronic track creates a boundless energy and sense of optimism that pairs with the naturally bright sound of the flute. The piece is challenging, but very attainable by undergraduate performers.

Manhunt

Manhunt by Graeme Rosner. This piece was commissioned and premiered by Dakota Corbliss.

Approximately 9 minutes in length, Manhunt is an intense, 3-movement work that showcases technical proficiency, lyrical playing, and extended techniques on the horn. Set to a retro backing track that utilizes emulations of analog synthesizers, Manhunt is both nostalgic and futuristic.

Arbiter

The world premiere of Arbiter by Graeme Rosner, a piece for solo clarinet and electronics. Arbiter was commissioned and premiered by Cassandra Hanson. The premiere took place on December 7, 2019 at the University of South Carolina School of Music New Voices Concert.

Arbiter is retro, cyberpunk, and flamenco jam-packed into 6.5 minutes of music. This piece allows the soloist to show off their lyrical and expressive playing, as well as their technical ability.
